Moving Checklist
The Ultimate UK Moving Home ChecklistYour essential step-by-step guide to a smooth and stress-free move.
Your Journey to a New Home, Made Simple
Moving home can feel like a huge task, but with a little organisation, it doesn’t have to be stressful. This checklist is designed to guide you through the entire process, from weeks before the big day to settling into your new property. Follow these steps to ensure nothing gets forgotten.
Your Timeline for a Successful Move
4-6 Weeks Before You Move
Confirm Your Moving Date: Solidify your move-in date with us.
Book a Removals Company: Get quotes and book a reputable removal firm. If you’re moving yourself, book a van rental.
Declutter Your Belongings: This is the perfect opportunity to sort through your items. Decide what to keep, sell, donate, or recycle. This will save you time and money when packing.
Order Packing Supplies: Stock up on strong boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and marker pens.
Notify Your Landlord/Agent: If you are currently renting, ensure you have given the correct notice period as per your tenancy agreement.
2-3 Weeks Before You Move
Start Packing Non-Essential Items: Begin packing items you don’t use daily, such as books, out-of-season clothing, and decorative objects.
Notify Key Providers: Inform your utility providers (gas, electricity, water), council tax office, and broadband provider of your moving date and new address.
Set Up Mail Redirection: Arrange for Royal Mail to redirect your post to your new address to ensure you don’t miss any important letters.
Update Your Address: Inform your bank, credit card companies, GP, dentist, and employer of your new address. Don’t forget to update your driving licence and any subscriptions.
The Week Before You Move
Confirm with Removals Company: Double-check the arrangements, confirming arrival times and addresses.
Finish Packing: Pack the majority of your remaining items, clearly labelling each box with its contents and the room it belongs in.
Pack an ‘Essentials Box’: This is a lifesaver! Pack a separate box with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival: kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, snacks, toiletries, phone chargers, and basic tools.
Arrange Child/Pet Care: If necessary, arrange for children or pets to be looked after on moving day to keep them safe and reduce stress.
Clean Your Current Property: Begin a deep clean of your current home to ensure you leave it in the condition required by your tenancy agreement.
Moving Day!
Take Final Meter Readings: Read your gas, electricity, and water meters at your old property and take photos for your records.
Supervise the Movers: Be on hand to guide the removal team and answer any questions.
Do a Final Walk-Through: Once the property is empty, do one last check of every room, cupboard, and loft space to ensure nothing is left behind.
Collect Your New Keys: Liaise with us to collect the keys to your new home.
Check Your New Home: Before the movers unload, do a quick check of your new property. Take meter readings and check that everything is as expected.
Unpack Your Essentials Box: Get your kettle on! This will make the rest of the unpacking process feel much more manageable.
Welcome to Your New Home
A few final tips to help you settle into your new home:
Test Your Smoke Alarms: Make this the first safety check you do.
Find the Stopcock: Locate the main water shut-off valve in case of an emergency.
Register to Vote: Update your details on the electoral roll.
Explore Your New Area: Take a walk around your new neighbourhood and introduce yourself to your neighbours.
